hello tumblr. i am currently sitting down decompressing from a weekend at baltimore’s open space PMF, which was an honour to share a small piece of space at (as ever, thanks to emily for doing her many things and allowing me to ride the coattails).
it’s been almost two years since my first experience of open space and the PMF, and that weekend remains a strong influence on my thoughts regarding art and expression. on the ride home we discussed how much of what we liked about baltimore shared so much of what appeals to us in punk, and how it’s frustrating to feel so supported in every other aspect of life in philadelphia and london apart from the one that baltimore fulfils so well. can i get $1 for every time someone had told me that they thought my first photozine was a “rip off” because it’s “just pictures”? the two don’t meet, at least not often.
visiting baltimore again, i am still blown away by the existence of something like floristree, like current space, like open space’s previous physical entity. these spaces support so much variety and creativity as well as DIY music and yet i still feel as if a space like any of the ones i listed is a challenge in the cities i’ve resided in. these spaces are as important to the livelihood of punk as any other kind of art, so why the dichotomy? why no storefronts where zines meet photography books? why the lack of inclusive galleries where i can speak to people who are creating weird tangible sculptures and huge canvases? i’m not alone in thinking this.
i’ve met photographers, comic artists, and people who work in a hundred different mediums other than yelling into a microphone stomping around two chord punk (as valid an art to me as any other) here and at home. i really enjoy where i live, and i truly love my home city. there is certainly things i think both has nowhere else does better. the support network of art outside of music (on a scale anywhere near a similar standing) is not one of them.
it was not only exciting to reconnect with old friends i met during that spring and summer but see what they are doing now (rock512devil, get lost press, much more). baltimore has a very unique force that nowhere else has been able to harness in the same way. the people behind open space are beautiful people. the diversity in PMF is a beautiful thing. i hope no one residing in baltimore takes any of that for granted.
